Since August 2001, our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has been serving the healthcare needs of critically ill or injured
children from birth to eighteen years of age. Critically ill or injured children and their families no longer have to leave the local
community to receive quality, specialized medical care. As part of the Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital , we can treat a greater
variety of conditions with our growing specialist physicians.
Pediatric intensivists and pediatric specialists in the areas of Pediatric Neurology, Surgery, Endocrinology, Urology,
Neurosurgery, Cardiology, and Gastroenterology are part of the growing medical staff supporting our PICU patients. In
addition, Registered Pharmacists, Respiratory Therapists, Nutritionists, Medical-Social Workers, and Pastoral Care provide
services to patients and families through the PICU.
Five beds with the latest monitoring technology are housed in the PICU and staffed by Pediatric Critical Care Registered
Nurses. Approximately 16 nurses are on staff, with at least two nurses and one Respiratory Therapist on duty at all times.
The unit maintains a 1:1 to 2:1 nurse to patient ratio.
All of the monitoring devices and medical equipment can be moved and adjusted to make the patient more comfortable,
allowing a bed to be near a window or in the center of the room if needed.
The design of the unit accommodates the variety of patients it sees. Fully equipped sleep rooms and an eat-in kitchen are
provided so families of patients can feel as close to home as possible. Families are encouraged to take an active role in their
child's plan of care that will aid in the recovery process.
